The Motors Unit for the Ellensburg Police Department focuses on traffic safety in areas where patrol cars wouldn't be as effective. In 2014, officers spent over 500 hours on the motors enforcing school zone speeds and traffic laws on other major thoroughfares.
Officers on motors spent time at safety events and escort details. In addition to funeral escorts and leading the annual Ellensburg Rodeo Parade, the motors assisted traffic control for the first annual Northwest Ride of Dreams to support Special Olympics.
"The biggest advantage of using the motors versus a patrol car is the approachability. When an offficer is on a motor bike, people walking by regularly say "hi" and sometimes strike up a conversation".
